NZDPU G7 Policy Note

Submission on Climate Transition-Related Data to the G7 Climate Change Mitigation Working Group

The NZDPU was asked by the Italian presidency of the G7 to provide input into Workstream 2 of the Climate Change Mitigation Working Group (CCMWG). The NZDPU submitted this policy note and also presented to the working group on 16 July 2024.

Over the past several years, there have been significant efforts by governments, regulators, and stock exchanges around the world to require public companies and other organizations to disclose climate transition-related data, including their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and related targets.

In addition, the number of companies that disclose climate transition-related data has steadily increased, even in countries where climate-related disclosure requirements are not yet in effect or climate-related reporting is voluntary. Nevertheless, there are key challenges associated with discoverability and accessibility, comparability, and reliability of climate transition-related data that inhibit or complicate use of such data in decision-making.

Addressing these challenges would support more informed decision-making by a variety of users of climate transition-related data, including governments, financial institutions, non-financial companies, civil society, and others, in the net-zero transition.

Download our policy note to see recommendations that address these challenges.
